Defining Plagiarism: introduction

Plagiarism is a word that is often misunderstood.

Its basic meaning, according to Roget's Thesaurus (1988) is:

to copy, repeat, fake, borrow or to steal someone else's work.

Plagiarism can happen uninentionally - the next few sections will help you understand what is and isn't permitted in order to avoid plagiarism.

What I would define plagiarism to be is using someone else's work unauthorisedly, to present it as your work and falsely claim the benefit for that.
